Dr. Valentine Lobo
MBBS, MD, DM (Nephrology) — Consultant Nephrologist, Department of Nephrology, KEM Hospital, Pune
Dr. Valentine Lobo has been a consultant nephrologist at KEM Hospital, Pune for over two decades, caring for adult patients with kidney disease and helping train successive cohorts of nephrology trainees through the hospital's teaching programme. His clinical and academic interests centre on acute kidney injury, haemodialysis and thrombotic microangiopathy — an area he has actively researched and published on, and which sits at the very core of atypical HUS.
His contributions are particularly valuable in the adult and pregnancy-associated faces of the disease, where aHUS is so often missed. He has been senior author on important Indian work characterising the high prevalence of CFHR gene deletions in women with pregnancy-associated HUS, and has reported on adult aHUS associated with the CFH/CFHR-1 hybrid gene — among the early such observations from India. For the Foundation, his perspective is essential to extending our reach into the adult patient population and across western India.
